Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” (Luke 5:5, NIV)
How many times have we said or thought Simon’s first sentence without going on to his second one?
How many times do I have ready excuses for why I will not obey the commands of Jesus? And, like Simon, they are often good reasons. But the issue is not whether I have a good excuse. The issue is whether I am willing to obey because Jesus says so.
How often do people in our churches say these words? And they often have good reasons and good hearts. They are tired and defeated. But Jesus knew this before he gave Simon his command.
What is he telling us to do? Are we willing to obey?
