Selling who we are or who we follow

My Facebook friend Wesley T. S. Wong posted this cartoon on his timeline. I asked him to translate it. The rough translation is that the pastor is encouraging the young non-Christian to become a Christian because Christianity is the young and hip option among the religions.

The point of the cartoon is that Christianity should not be “sold” on the basis of being young and hip. It should be offered as the way, the truth, and the life.

As an American Christian, the cartoon was interesting to me because we have almost the reverse situation here. Christianity struggles in America and is constantly told it does so because it is old and un-cool and behind the times. In other parts of the world, Christianity is the hip, youthful thing.

In both cases, to speak to the point of the cartoon, selling Christianity because of who is already in the club misses the point.
