Brueggemann: The function of Scripture

It is the function of the Scriptures to renew the church and call it to repentance. This repentance means to break off old ways. But repentance is also grounded in the bold promise of God that newness is to be given and new life is possible and more joyous. It is the nature of the church to be addressed, empowered, and called into question by the Scriptures. Scripture that does not move the church is likely Scripture not taken seriously. Church that is not powered by the Scriptures is likely not a faithful or powerful church.
