I want to offer a challenge/bit of encouragement to my brothers and sisters in the Methodist/Wesleyan family.
Along with your various resolutions about calorie intake and exercise and starting a new hobby, make this promise to yourself. Read one of John Wesley’s sermons each week and think about the ways it does or does not speak to you today. At one sermon per week, that’s the first 52, which depending on which list you use is almost the entire set of “standard” sermons. You can read the funeral sermon for George Whitefield on New Year’s Day 2013 to close out the list.
If you don’t own a copy of the sermons in book form, here’s a link to the sermons by number.
First up, Sermon 1 “Salvation by Faith.”
I have been planning on doing this for months. I have read the 52 (and more), but I really am excited about doing them in sequence. I will probably blog on it.
Sounds like a great idea! Also, thanks for linking to them since I do not yet own them in print.
I’m pulling the old Outler collection down from my shelf. I still prefer old fashioned hard copies for reading like this. I wonder if it these will be as difficult to read some 30 years after the first time. Thanks for the idea.
I had planned on reading Outler’s Anthology of Wesley’s Sermons for the New Year but I love the idea of reading his first 52 sermons and trying to gain a sense of his growth and change of his theology over the course of his many sermons.
Thanks for the love bro. Appreciate this readings Too blessed to be stressed…
