UMC Doctrine: Justification

The United Methodist Church’s doctrinal standards maintain classic Reformation understandings of justification by grace through faith.

We do not deserve and we cannot merit the pardoning grace of God, but we receive it nonetheless. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Articles of Religion, Article IX — Of the Justification of Man

We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith, only, is a most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort.
