Lectionary sermon series alert

Another blow against the old canard that you can either preach the lectionary or you can preach by sermon series.

The epistle reading the next three weeks from 1 Corinthians has a lovely series right there for you.

This week, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11: Spiritual Gifts

Next week, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a: Many Gifts, One Body.

Third week, 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13: Love, the guide for the use of our gifts The greatest gift

My titles are not too snappy, but this is a lovely 3-week series for the season after epiphany. Or, so it seems to me.

  1. Excellent! Lectionary or not, the key is to preach it well. I like the looks of your series.

Also, if it helps, I’ll even add an unsolicited observation. While Love is our guide, when you read 1 Corinthians 13, consider the possibility that Paul may mean that Love is the ultimate gift of the Holy Spirit.

Note that he starts out the section at the end of ch. 12 with “But eagerly desire the greater gifts.” Then he launches into his poetic dissertation on Love, and he ends with the resounding “And these three remain: Faith, Hope, Love. But the greatest of these is Love.”

Perhaps Paul means that speaking in tongues is a good gift, but not everyone gets it and it’s certainly not the greatest. However, everyone gets Faith, Hope, and Love. These gifts of the Spirit are available to us all. So if you’re going to fight over who has the most of a certain gift, fight over these. And the greatest of these three spiritual gifts is Love.

Anyway, you can look at these things any number of ways, as we all know, and I probably offered more than you wanted. I look forward to hearing what you might preach. God bless.

    1. I appreciate the insights, Lauren.

My actual working title is simply, “The greatest of these,” which certainly goes in the direction you suggest. I’m not sure where I came up with what I put in the post.

My hope is to use these sermons to open the door to a spiritual gifts workshop with the congregation using Dan Dick’s Equipped for Every Good Work. I do not know if that is possible, but we shall see.
