Voting like a Methodist

Reblogged from John Meunier:

John Wesley wrote in his journal Oct. 6, 1774:

I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them, 1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy: 2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against: And, 3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.

Let those with ears, hear!

This post suddenly got a lot of hits yesterday. I think someone put it on Facebook. Since it seems timely, I'll put it here on the top of the list.

  1. @KloveKelli tweeted a picture of a stained glass window with this quote! AND put it on FB. It is a GREAT quote!

  2. I too saw this on Facebook and shared it.
I have received so many ugly political emails and seen so many ugly post on Facebook that it concerns me since all of these post and emails are posted and emailed by people who profess to be Christians.

I want to ask them, “What would Jesus do?” Did He not feed the hungry, clothe the poor and throw the money changers from the temple?

I want to know, just what do you have to do and think to be a Christan these days?

  3. Jesus’ Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37; see also Matthew 25: 34-40, 2 Cor. 9: 6-11) really helped me with above question, “…what do we need to do and think to be a Christian these days?” !
No “right religion” big wig, no Gov sponsored lawyer type with gov red tape–my spouse said the injured fellow would be dead by the time they got the allotment approval–BUT an out-group (still God-honoring) individual, of apparent means (NB own provisions and wheels, no homeless shelter gov dole, but an inn, for this injured one)–and hard cash for the inn keeper, both then and (without counting cost, “any extra expenses”) for when he returns (so, a regular, on the Jesusalem & Jericho route?) for the one in need of mercy…”Go and do likewise,” (Jesus).

    • @Valerie Gibbs

Thanks so much for your reply. It put my mind at rest because these are things I was taught as a child. My Christian faith is intact and will continue to support those in need.

  4. I love this comment but when I went to look at my copy of the Journals of John Wesley – which are his published journals – I couldn’t find it. Can you give the source? Thanks! Mary

    • Well, I’m not sure how to answer more than this. My collected works are the Thomas Jackson editions that were republished by Baker Books. The date is Oct. 6, 1774. The title page on the section in which it appears is: “An Extract of the Rev. Mr. John Wesley’s Journal From September 13, 1773 to January 2, 1776. Number XVII

      • Thanks! That is helpful. I’m using a different version that I think was published during Wesley’s life. Apparently he didn’t include it in his own “works.”
