Ken Schenck writes about “the gospel” and the meaning of evangelism. Here’s his summation of the gospel:
The gospel is the good news that 1) our God reigns (Gospels) and that 2) Jesus is king (Paul), 3) along with all the good stuff that entails (Acts). It’s not about how to get saved and, although our salvation is part of the good news, it is a minor part. It is more an implication of the gospel than the focus of the gospel.
That “gospel” doesn’t impact people or transform their lives. It is simply a declaration of a kingship of a far away ruler that will never visit. It’s a very convenient gospel for those who prefer an absentee landlord instead of a personal God that demands our love, trust, and obedience and yet loves us even when we fail to live up to His standards.
