What is a Wesleyan response to the Super Bowl?
My wife spent her day today shepherding education students to field placements at public schools in Indianapolis. What she saw had her wondering about the millions of dollars spent to prepare and promote the Super Bowl. She thought about the millions that are being spent this week and the children she saw with dirty clothing and empty stomachs.
Our local paper and national news have written about sex trafficking and sexual slavery that follows the game from city to city each year. Some people estimate that half of all adults will bet on some aspect of the game. Alcohol sales will go through the roof this weekend despite Indiana’s laws against selling alcohol on Sunday.
This is not to say the event has no redeeming qualities, but I wonder what John Wesley would say. I wonder even more what he would do if he were here in central Indiana this week.
